In the 1930’s, the Original Carter Family was being broadcast on national radio acquiring long lasting fame for their music. It would not be too long before original member, Maybelle Carter and her three young daughter’s, Helen, June and Anita, would continue the Carter Family legacy with their own brand of music. Accompanying themselves on their own instruments, they would sing in beautiful harmonies and record hundreds of singles, even occasionally writing their own tunes. They toured the South with stars such as Elvis Presley, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, becoming regulars on all the big radio shows and members of the Grand Ol’ Opry. June would eventually begin a solo career and become most well-known for her comedy- be it her famous “mud hole gag” or her unforgettable character “Aunt Polly”. She spent 17 years on the Grand Ol’ Opry stage before resigning at the age of 37 to devote herself to being Johnny Cash’s wife and support.
As I have spent the last two years researching The Carter Sisters specifically for this show, I began to wonder why I hadn’t really been familiar with them previously. I have become convinced that the Carter Sisters simply were the product of a much more innocent age in the entertainment business. These girls grew up as part of the original Carter Family and music was not so much a business to them as it was their way of life and their passion. And so it has become a passion of mine to shed light on these talented women along with their mother and country music’s mother, Maybelle Carter. May we all have the opportunity to return to a sense of purity and innocence within in the business, if only just for a few hours through their story: Wildwood Flowers. Join us for this tribute to an incredibly talented performer and her family.
